LAUNDRY DAY
This was written yesterday
It it’s laundry day. For us that means a trip to the neighboring town and the laundromat. The laundromat is an interesting place to observe people. Lovers, young and old, sit side by side. Those with no one with whom to share a space, sit further apart from the others. Today, lovers and loaners alike, are transfixed by cellphones and tablets. One lone teenage girl sits crosslegged on a couch with a book in her hands. I wonder is it for pleasure that she reads, or is it a homework assignment?
The background sounds are of the sloshing and spinning of the washing machines, the hum hum of the dryers (with an occasional thump or clank), the clink-clink-clink-clink-clink of the change machines as they turn paper bills into silver quarters, and the tiny, tinny sounds of cellphones.
There are organic sounds also; people talking (some in other languages), children playing, running, and screaming/laughing, and occasionally a dog (service animal?) sniffing, scratching, or whimpering.
I’m sitting with my back to a window. The warmth from the sun is a comfortable counterpoint to the chilly stream of air conditioned air coming from the ceiling vents.
Time passes in small increments, measured by the quarters deposited.
