2020 March 15 Sunday in Liberty Hill Texas

Welcome to our daily journal! Send Mail to: TomAndEllaJournal@gmail.com

Day two of being self isolated because of the corona-virus.

t appears that the good news in the forecast is that our present temperature of fifty seven is as cool as it going to be today. The less exciting news is that the day’s high is only going to be seven degrees warmer than our present temperature.

he Weatherbug declares that it is cloudy. I have no reason to doubt that it is indeed cloudy . . . somewhere above the fog. It doesn’t appear to be very dense right here. I hope that we don’t discover, on our drive to Cross Tracks Church, that visibility is limited in some of the low spots in the road.

ross Tracks Church, Pastor John Saint’s sermon, “Spring Cleaning.” It was based on the Gospel of John chapter 2:13-22, where Jesus cleansed the temple.

Time of COV19

ttendance was W A Y down at our first worship service today. You will also notice that people are keeping their distances. There were five things, that we normally do, that today we did not do.

  1. Great each other with a handshake, hug, and word of greeting.
  2. Pass the offering plates. Instead they were left on a table by the doors.
  3. Pass the attendance books. I’m assuming that someone just did a head count.
  4. We had no adult Sunday school. I don’t know about the children.
  5. We had no breakfast bar. There were donuts that were served by one person with tongs. Usually there are tacos, sausage & egg sandwiches, and a variety of self serve pastries.

More COV19 related.

told you yesterday that we decided that we would not attend Over The Hill Gang* until there was some resolution to this viral pandemic. I received an email stating that the OTHG will not be meeting until at least April.

had yesterday said that going to Grandies** and choir practice were still unknowns. Grandies is no longer an unknown. I received an email from them also stating that they are suspending meetings until at least April. No word about choir practice.

f you will recall, Friday we attended the 50+ soup and salad lunch. Since attendance was far less than expected, they were giving leftover soup and salad to take home. We decided to forego the salad but did bring home soup. Today, for lunch, I dumped that soup into the Instapot, added some water, and some dumplings, then set the machine on the “soup” setting and let it go. I could have heated it faster in the microwave, but that would not have cooked the dumplings.

s I discovered, pressure cooking dumplings is not the best method. It made them very dense balls of cooked dough. There still tasted good but had to be cut into smaller pieces.

ix thirty and it is still fairly light. However it is also still overcast and foggy.

God bless and g’nite.

y one o’clock it had reached seventy six and it was still completely blanketed in clouds

Today was the monthly luncheon for the 50+ group at Leander UMC. Today it was a soup and salad meal. Today we had a speaker from the Leander Parks and Recreation Office to talk about the planned new building for the senior center, to be opened in 2021. He also gave us information about the Active Adults program.

made some boiled eggs, after we returned home. Six minutes to cook perfect hardboiled eggs. Instapot hard boiled eggs are so easy to peel because the shell comes off in bigger pieces without taking part of the white with it. However, I found an even quicker and easier way to BLOW egg from the shell. Of course you are going to rinse the egg afterwards..

was fortunate to capture thus photograph when I did. This was the last that was seen of the sun.

arly this morning earth’s tiny twin shone as brightly as yesterday’s reluctant sun. Earth and moon, siblings twirling together through space in their struggle, pulling apart, then draw closer once again.

nterestingly while this showed mostly cloudy, at the same time, there was a dense fog alert.

he top photograph was taken well before dawn. The middle photo was taken a few minutes before dawn. Three third picture was taken a few minutes after dawn. Ah, there is the dense fog for which they were alerting me.

esterday I wrote about liking rain. As I was saving that short piece in a file, I found this short piece I had written about fifteen years ago.

Smelling Rain

Have you ever noticed how rain changes the smell of things? Oddly enough when it first starts to rain the air smells dusty (if you’re in country). In the city the rain, at first, seems to bring out the smells of hot sidewalks and old oil.

Usually you can smell the rain coming before it arrives.
During the rain, smells are suppressed. All you smell is rain!
Now! After the rain! That’s when everything smells fresh and cool and clean.
Except the dog!

t the Georgetown senior center today, Ella and I played four rounds of Fast Track.

his is the track of our travels today. From Stocktank RV Park to Madella Hilliard Senior Center in Georgetown and back again by a slightly different route.

nce we were home. Ella fell coming from the truck to the RV. Okay Ella in your own words tell us what happened.

ell when I got out of the truck, I went out to talk to Jackie, Tresa’s sister, who had stopped at the dumpster.

hen walking back in, I picked up a spoon that was on the ground. I was also bending over to pick up a piece of paper that was on the ground. In the process of picking up the paper, I lost my balance. I did about 3 yards of walking real fast, where I was trying to catch up with myself, so that I wouldn’t fall. In the end I did fall. But I think I went down a little gentler than I might have otherwise.

y knee is scrapped, but I really don’t feel too bad. And then Tom came out to help me get up and brush all the leaves off of me, and the dirt.

hese jeans definitely are going into the laundry, because I have mud on my pants from the rain that we’ve had the last few days.

very couple of hours I’ve been asking, “How do you feel now?” I really don’t want her covering up something because “it’s nothing.” Yes, she does that sometimes because she doesn’t want to “be a bother.” I do the same thing, but it’s frustrating when she does it.

fter burning through the fog this morning, Ol’ Sol has been burning bright and (relatively) hot. It topped out at seventy five degrees.

his is the sky that greeted us as we came our from Cross Tracks Church’s Tuesday night prayer meeting.

2020 March 08 Sunday in Liberty Hill Texas Welcome to our daily journal! Send Mail to: TomAndEllaJournal@gmail.com

ep, that is how the sky looked this morning. Another graveyard gray day. It would be more appropriate for Good Friday mourning than a Sunday morning.astor John Saint of Cross Tracks Church, Liberty Hill, Texas, preaching “Pick Up Your Cross”. Another thought provoking sermon.fter 9 o’clock worship we went to our Sunday school class. Gary Bible is our teacher. But today he is sick. I started the discussion and attempted to keep it on track, but not very successfully..nce we returned home from worship, Ella made chili in the crockpot. That meant it was close to 2 when we ate. The chili was nice and thick so we arte it in flour tortillas with some shredded cheddar.his photo at 5:30 this afternoon looks just like the one taken just before 8 this morning.or supper I made some special pancakes, butter pecan. It was awful complicated (not). I mixed a butter pecan cake mix to the directions for making a cake. However, instead of baking, I ladled them onto the griddle. I should have made a half or third or the mix. A whole box was too much for two old people too eat..IF YOU ENJOYED MY JOURNAL ENTRY, PLEASE CLICK THE LIKE BUTTON, LEAVE A COMMENT AND/OR FOLLOW.

he sixty three degrees was nice to wake to, even if the sky looked like a sailors wool blanket

he whole sky was so gray that this small patch of lighter gray, in the south, looked almost white.

ixing breakfast in the George Foreman grill. Between this grill and the Instapot we do 99% of our cooking.

losing the lid of the grill cooks the tops of the eggs without flipping them. Also, thanks to the nonstick surface, no added fats.

ven the biscuits were done in the grill without heating the oven (and the rest of the kitchen). This is NOT a paid advertisement (though if they wanted to throw some money my way, I wouldn’t duck). I just really like these two appliances.

e had phone calls today from a niece and a daughter. Both live up north, where it was a sunny fifty three degrees. It is always nice to hear from family.

onight’s prayer meeting consisted only of the pastor and two couples. That is unusual. Generally there are about a dozen in attendance. I hope that it is not in response to the “Talking Heads” on television news programs warning people to avoid crowds. The coronavirus is worrisome because there currently is no cure. But people are reacting as if it is the and of the world. The reality is that the total number of deaths in the United States is 9. Worldwide the death total is 3,000. For perspective, 750,000 people die from mosquito bites and diseases they carry.

2020 March 01 Sunday

2020 March 01 Sunday in Liberty Hill, Texas ell, it’s not a pretty sunrise. However, if you look closely enough, you may see some green leaves and white flowers on the trees, possibly a bee or more.astor John Saint’s sermon on “Lenten Discipline” was thirteen minutes of thought provoking insights, as well as a little church history.fter church we were invited to some friend’s home for lunch and games. Ella’s and my team lost both games. However, it gave us the chance to deliver two Fast Tracks games. One to each couple. The games were made by a friend in Iowa and shipped to us in Texas.ATTENTION! Everyone who does NOT know what Snopes.com is, raise your hand. Okay, put your hand down.Nobody can see you.

Now that you have self-identified yourself as gullible I have something that I need to tell you: People post things that are NOT true. Do NOT repost things that you’ve read on an internet site without verifying the validity of the claim. It is very easy to go to http://www.snopes.com and type in a few key words and the truth or fiction of a story.

In the very early days of the internet there was an email going around that claimed something like this, “Microsoft is conducting a study of their email system. If you receive and forward this email, Microsoft will reimburse you with $100.00.” The fact that it was so stupid to think that Microsoft (or anybody else) would pay you for forwarding an email did not keep people from doing it. I continued to see that email passed around for years and years.

PLEASE! Before you forward the latest piece of cr@p that you read … check to see if it is true.

Thanks for your time

he five o’clock clouds look pretty much the same as later. That’s a good thing because I wasn’t in a position to take photos later.Bedtime and still very warm.

ill and Karen invited Ella and I to their home to play Fast Track today. We played for games in two hours. Karen and I were partners and we won all four games.

peaking of Fast Track, the three game boards, that Ella ordered from Duane, arrived today. They were sitting on the deck, when we arrived home.

I saw an ad today for a prescription medicine to help people whose eyelashes have stopped growing! There are people all over the world dying of all types of infectious diseases an. d we have a medication that helps when your eyelashes stop growing?

It makes me sick to think that I live in a society that cares more about peoples eyelashes than real people dying because of infectious diseases, starvation and crappy living conditions.

We are a nation of riches. We have an excess of ability, an excess of talent, an excess of wealth … and this is what we do with it?

No wonder Jesus said that it was easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.

This isn’t the American dream. This is the American nightmare.

Brahm’s Lullaby

ullaby and goodnight,
With lilies of white
And roses of red
To pillow your head
May you wake when the day
Chases darkness away,
May you wake when the day
Chases darkness away.

Lullaby and goodnight.
Let angels of light
Spread wings round your bed
And guard you from dread.
Slumber gently and deep
In the dreamland of sleep,
Slumber gently and deep
In the dreamland of sleep.

oing for a high temperature of seventy four. However, it over shot the mark and landed on seventy eight degrees. The mercury topped out at eighty five inside. Even with the door open and a fan oscillating, it was too warm for yours truly. I shut the door and started the air conditioning. Once it was down to seventy five inside, the a/c went off and the door was once again open.

There was a little color in the sky this morning. However, I never actually saw the sun, which remained shrouded in clouds until midday.

astor John Saint’s sermon this morning at Cross Tracks Church, Liberty Hill, Texas was “You Have Heard It Said”

fter the worship service, we went to our Sunday school class. We have just begun to study Adam Hamilton’s book “Making Sense Of The Bible.” Having just read the introduction and the first three short chapters, I can already tell that I’m going to love this book.

e needed a few essentials to restock our refrigerator and pantry. That meant a trip to the Wal-Mart in Cedar Park. While there I topped off the truck’s gas tank.

y the time we were dove at Wal-Mart, it was past noon and time for lunch. Golden Chick was on or way home so we went through the drive-up. We brought the food home and ate here.

esterday evening we received a text from the RV park owner that the yards would be mowed on Sunday. We were asked to make sure that everything was picked up before the mowers arrived. I brought our two camping chairs up on the deck a and found a few scraps of trash that went into the trash. Today, when we returned from our travels, the site head been mowed. There really isn’t much grass, the ground is too full of rocks for much to grow. However the recent rain has caused some straggly looking weeds to pop up. Now they’re gone.

The next year we bought a membership with Cutty’s Des Moines Camping Club which is a members’ owned resort in the Des Moines area.

The campground is over eighty acres of gently rolling sparsely forested hills with an eleven acre fishing lake in the middle. The resort has amenities such as: two outdoor pools, wading pool, eighteen hole miniature golf, western play village, giant slide, playgrounds, basket ball courts, horseshoe pitching areas, sand volley ball, shuffle board and tennis courts.

Cutty’s is much like the small towns in which Ella and I grew up. There is a general store, café, laundry facilities, RV parts store, repair shop and a large “main street” meeting area where there are all types of entertainment every weekend during the camping season. One of the biggest attractions for us was the large clubhouse which remains open year around. The clubhouse has in indoor pool, sauna, hot tub, exercise room, showers, and laundry.

slept just under six hours this morning. However, I awakened on my own without the aid of an alarm. I guess that means that I had slept enough. Who am I to argue with my body’s determination of how much sleep it requires?

ixty two degrees this morning. No wonder I was too warm under the covers last night. No sunrise photo because of the heavy clouds cover.

astor John Saint’s sermon “THE COURAGE TO BE” was insightful.

s I was using my phone this morning and entering in a message, I got a piece of glass from the cracked screen protector in the tip of my finger.

o once worship and Sunday school were over, we went to Verizon to get a new screen protector. We went to the store closest to home. They did not have one. Rather than drive to the next closest one, I called them and gave them the information about my phone. They said they had one and It was $38.00.

ather than drive to that store, I went to Amazon. My search brought up several options that fit my phone. They ranged in price from $7.99 for a pack of three to $19.99 for a pack of two. Both with guaranteed next day delivery. I ordered the cheapest. Our I f it works, great. If It doesn’t, I’m only or $7.99 and may be able to return them. Right now I’m operating without that screen protector so as to not get more glass in my finger.

This year at Christmas time, I

had a remarkable encounter. I

(Santa) was sitting in my big

chair at Lakeline mall when I

noticed a young woman who

obviously had “special needs”

and her helper standing

outside the set. I went over to

her and was introduced. I was

told that she was deaf and

nearly blind.

I signed, I am Santa, to her. She reached up and felt my face

and hat then took my hand

and pulled it close to her face.

She found the edge of my

glove and was pulling at it. So I

removed the glove so that she

could see/feel my hand. She

then once more examined my

face. After slightly pulling on

my beard (yes it’s real), she

signed that I needed to cut it. I

laughed and signed, I love you

and merry Christmas.

2020 February 08 Saturday

2020 February 08 Saturday in Liberty Hill, Texas http://TomAndEllaJournal.WordPress.comot as much sleep as I had hoped for, but it gave me a chance to view the moon. There was no worry of our water supply freezing again last night. And with the sky so clear It should warm nicely today.couldn’t see any stars but the full moon was so bright that all the werewolves must have been restless over night. I really need to stop watching old horror films.he sun came up nice and bright. I had hoped of another sunny day with passive solar heating.owever, look at that bank of dark clouds coming up from the south. They are moving like they’re being chased by the devil himself.nd a few moments latter, the clouds caught up to the sun and swallowed it whole. I hope they developed heart burn.few of us gathered to bag cookies for the annual Grandies** Valentine’s Day cookie sale at church. It only took about twenty minutes for three of us to split about twelve dozen cookies into bags of two each. This is one of several fund raisers for our group. It suit supports our ministries.nce again it was laundry day. Three washer loads and two dryers. As usual I took a short nap while Ella kept an eye on the laundry.fter the clothes were washed, mostly folded, and packed away for transport home, it was time for lunch. We couldn’t decide on what to eat. When undecided, go to a buffet. We went to Star Buffet.fter a leisurely lunch, we headed toward home. We didn’t get far before we were turned around by the police. Traffic was stopped at a railroad crossing. Other than the fact that the gates were down and the lights flashing at the crossing, we couldn’t see anything. We got turned around but we were in very heavy stop and go traffic for a half hour to forty five minutes before we reached a place where we could resume normal speed. I don’t suppose we will ever mote what was going on.progression toward sunset with fast moving clouds. It made for some interesting photographs.IF YOU ENJOYED MY JOURNAL ENTRY, PLEASE CLICK THE LIKE BUTTON, LEAVE A COMMENT AND/OR FOLLOW.
