🟡 DRAGON: A mighty lizard (all two and a half inches of it) kept a watchful eye on Ella and I as we sat on our patio this morning.  While I was locking eyes with this fearful predator a humming bird flitted by on her way to the neighbors feeder.

A terrifying beast of dark, ancient pedigree,

Stands tall at two inches (or maybe two and three-degree).

He perches on the patio, magnificent and grand,

The undisputed ruler of this tiny slice of land.

He eyes us both with fierce intent, his little throat puffed high,

Fixating on a staring contest, just his eyes and I.

I do not dare to make a move; I barely dare to breathe,

While beneath his scaled breast, ferocious passions seethe.

Ella watches silently, amazed we’re still alive,

Assessing our small chances that we might somehow survive

This apex predator of flies, this tiny scaled monarch,

Who rules the sunny concrete from the dawn until the dark.

Then suddenly, a thunderous roar! A flash of emerald green!

The swiftest, fiercest buzz-bomb that the yard has ever seen!

A hummingbird comes zipping past, a blurred and whirring streak,

Ignoring both the giant folk and lizard’s scary beak,

On urgent business to the neighbor’s feeder down the way,

Leaving the mighty lizard king with nothing left to say.

The staring contest broken, the lizard blinks his eyes,

Resigned to let us humans live beneath his summer skies.

He licks his chops, adjusts his tail, and decides to let us go.

The undisputed champion of the patio show.
